Class Descriptions

See the Lesson Policies for the details on the student/parent procedures. All students must be toilet-trained in order to enroll in any level. Any questions should be directed to the Swim Lesson Director, Corina Simms, at swimlessons@peddie.org.


Please, carefully read the class descriptions below to determine the current level of the student. If your student is not a 'Level One', please bring them in for a complimentary evaluation. Evaluation dates can be found here. If we must move the student down a level once the session has begun, there might not be space in another level and the $25 Change Fee applies.

Level One

Level 1 (4 -14 years old)

30 minutes- 4 students per class for youth swimmers No goggles allowed for children

This class is designed for children ages 4 -14 who are either completely new to swimming, or who cannot demonstrate all the skills listed below. Swimmers will learn the basics of staying afloat on the back and front and moving through the water safely for 10 feet. Children must be able to pay attention for 30 minutes at a time. Fundamental water safety skills will be taught.

Successful completion of Level 1 requires:

  • Safely entering & exiting the pool
  • Bobbing underwater
  • Front float rolling to back float without instructor support
  • 10 feet of front paddle using kicks and scoops 
  • Back floating for at least 10 seconds
  • 10 feet of back swimming
  • Fundamental water Safety Skills will be taught and emphasized
  • SWIM/FLOAT/SWIM

Level Two

Level 2 ( Ages 5-17)

30 Minute Class Pre-requisite: Passing Level 1 Goggles needed

This class is for the student who has completed Level 1 Emphasis will be on freestyle and backstroke and water safety skills

  • Front & back streamline push-offs from the wall
  • Treading water for 1 minute
  • Back float for 1 Minute
  • Consistent independent freestyle for 25 yards using a front streamline push-off, reaching arms, rotary breathing and straight leg flutter kick.
  • Consistent independent backstroke for 25 yards using a back streamline push-off, keeping head back with straight leg flutter kick.
  • Water safety skills with an emphasis on SWIM /FLOAT/SWIM


Level Three

Level 3 (5-17 year-old)

55 minutes- Pre-requisite: Level 2 skills Goggles required. No swim shirts.

In Level 3, children will continue to build on their technique and endurance in freestyle and backstroke. They also will be introduced to the mechanics of elemetary backstroke and breaststroke.

Successful completion of Level 3 requires:

  • 50 yards freestyle with proper body position, strong kick, and proper side breathing
  • 50 yards backstroke with proper body position and strong kick
  • Back float for two minutes
  • Treading water 2 minutes
  • 25 yards of elementary backstroke
  •  Breaststroke 25 Yards
  • Kneeling dive into the pool
  • Water safety skills SWIM /FLOAT/SWIM

Level Four

Level 4 (6-17 year old)

55 minutes, Pre-requisite: Level 3 skills Goggles required. No swim shirts.

Level 4 builds on the freestyle and backstroke skills learned in Level 3. Swimmers will increase their endurance and refine competitive breaststroke technique and be introduced to butterfly.

Successful completion of Level 4 requires:

  • 75 yards freestyle with proper body position, breathing, and kick
  • 75 yards backstroke with proper body position and kick
  • 50 yards of competitive breaststroke with proper whip kick, arm pull, and timing
  • 50 yards elementary backstroke
  • Butterfly with correct timing arms and kicks.
  • 100 yards Individual Medley (25 fly, 25 back, 25 breast, 25 free)
  • Flip-turns for freestyle and backstroke
  • 3 minutes of treading water
  • Back Float for 4 minutes
  • Standing Dives
  • Water safety skills SWIM/FLOAT/SWIM

Level Five

Level 5(7-17 years old) 

55 minutes, Pre-requisite: Level 4 Skills Goggles required. No swim shirts.

Level 5 builds on the freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly. Swimmers will increase their endurance, refine breaststroke and butterfly technique. focus on flip turns and diving starts.

Successful completion of Level 5 requires:

  • 100 yards freestyle with proper body position, breathing, and kick
  • 100 yards backstroke with proper body position and kick
  • 50 yards breaststroke with proper whip kick, arm pull, and timing
  • 50 yards butterfly with proper body position, breathing pattern , arm pull, kick, and timing
  • 50 yards elementary backstroke
  • 200 yard Individual Medley (50 fly, 50 back, 50 breast, 50 free)
  • Open turns for breaststroke and butterfly
  • Standing Dives
  • Treading Water for 5 minutes
  • Back Float for 5 minutes
  • Water safety skills SWIM/FLOAT/SWIM

Private Coaching

Private Coaching is swimmers Level 3 through Level 5 ages 6 years old through adults. We also offer private coaching for special needs students. Every private coaching student must be evaluated prior to registration.

Private Coaching Sessions will be taught by a senior-level instructor/ coach. Each private coaching session will be customized for the participating swimmer.

Advanced Technique

ADVANCED TECHNIQUE (7-17 years old) Highest Level in Peddie Swim School

55 minutes, Pre-requisite: Level 5 Skills/ Alternative to pre-comp/once a week class Goggles required. No swim shirts.

Level 5 builds on the freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly. Swimmers will increase their endurance, refine breaststroke and butterfly technique. Students will be divided up according to ability and be introduced to skills and drills for competitive swimming.

Successful completion of Level 5 requires:

  • 100 yards freestyle with proper body position, breathing, and kick
  • 100 yards backstroke with proper body position and kick
  • 50 yards breaststroke with proper whip kick, arm pull, and timing
  • 50 yards butterfly with proper body position, breathing pattern , arm pull, kick, and timing
  • 50 yards elementary backstroke
  • 200 yard Individual Medley (50 fly, 50 back, 50 breast, 50 free)
  • Flip-turns for freestyle and backstroke
  • Open turns for breaststroke and butterfly
  • Standing Dives
  • Treading Water for 5 minutes
  • Back Float for 5 minutes
  • Water safety skills SWIM/FLOAT/SWIM
